I heard that marching band is hard. How will I ever be able to memorize the music, march around the field, and do all of this at the same time?

The answer is simple. You weren't asked to learn your instrument in a month, were you? Learning something takes time and is a gradual process. We spend quite a bit of time learning to play and march separately. You can focus on the marching part, then focus on the playing part. Once you feel comfortable with the two, we slowly start to put them together. This process takes place during band camp. It is time consuming, but time is exactly what you need to be successful.

I heard that marching band is a lot of work and energy?

We won't lie, this is true. Ask any person that is part of a championship group in any activity, and they will tell you it takes time and energy to be great. If you despise exercising and breaking a sweat, this may not be for you. Some of our best rehearsing will take place when we are running around, working hard, and getting better. The CHS Band has a very set rehearsal schedule with strict attendance policies. Therefore, any students interested in the Chamberlain HS Band program should study the schedule carefully and make sure that you are able to make this commitment.

I may be involved in sports or other after school activities, so how can I possibly do marching band?

The CHS Band will rehearse Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4-8 pm.  Students that choose to be involved in a sport or other after-school activity that conflicts with the CHS Band may find be an "alternate" for the Band.

I heard that I will have a ton of homework my freshman year. How can I possibly do marching band and get good grades?

Most 9th graders we have talked to tell us that the homework load their freshman year was not as bad as they had been warned. In fact, many students actually get BETTER grades in the fall as marching band forces them to budget their time more wisely. Do not take our word for it, however. Talk to older students that have been in marching band before and see how they have managed to do it. It would be unfortunate for you to miss out on probably the most memorable part of your education because you were misinformed.

I heard being in band is expensive?

Yes, being in the band program will cost money, but there will be plenty of fundraisers to help pay for the cost of band. Many students will raise all of the costs, including trips, through fundraising alone. Don't let money deny you the experience of being in the Chamberlain HS Band program. Let us help you find a solution if money is a concern.
